ARUP's Laboratory Test Directory

Drugs of Abuse 9 Panel, Serum or Plasma - Screen with Reflex to Confirmation/Quantitation : 0092420

Mnemonic: DRUG SCRSP

Methodology: Qualitative Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay/ Quantitative Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/Quantitative Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 1-4 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate). Also acceptable: Plain red, green (sodium heparin), lavender (EDTA), or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation: Remove plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 4 mL plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 3 mL) Also acceptable: Serum.

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Remarks: Cocaine and cocaethylene are more stable in fluoride-preserved plasma than serum.

Unacceptable Conditions: Specimens exposed to repeated freeze/thaw cycles. Separator tubes. Plasma or whole blood collected in lt. blue (sodium citrate).

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 3 years

Reference Interval:

Drugs Covered and Cutoff Concentrations
Drugs/Drug Classes Screen Confirmation
Marijuana 30 ng/mL 5 ng/mL
Cocaine 30 ng/mL 20 ng/mL
Opiates 30 ng/mL 2 ng/mL
Phencyclidine 15 ng/mL 10 ng/mL
Amphetamines 30 ng/mL 20 ng/mL
Barbiturates 75 ng/mL 50 ng/mL
Methadone and metabolite 40 ng/mL 10 ng/mL
Benzodiazepines 75 ng/mL 20 ng/mL
Propoxyphene and metabolite 75 ng/mL 10 ng/mL

Interpretive Data: The absence of expected drug(s) and/or drug metabolite(s) may indicate non-compliance, inappropriate timing of specimen collection relative to drug administration, poor drug absorption, or limitations of testing. The concentration at which the screening test can detect a drug or metabolite varies within a drug class. Specimens for which drugs or drug classes are detected by the screen are reflexed to a second, more specific technology (GC/MS and/or LC-MS/MS). The concentration value must be greater than or equal to the cutoff to be reported as positive. Interpretive questions should be directed to the laboratory.

For medical purposes only; not valid for forensic use.
Note: Screen-positive specimens are automatically confirmed by GC/MS and/or LC-MS/MS; additional charges may apply.
CPT Code(s): 80101 x9 Screen; if positive, add appropriate code for drug confirmed: 82542 Marijuana; 82520 Cocaine; 83925 Opiates; 83992 Phencyclidine; 82145 Amphetamines; 82205 Barbiturates; 80154 Benzodiazepines; 83840 Methadone; 83925 Propoxyphene
