Methodology: Qualitative Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry
Performed: Sun-Wed, Fri, Sat
Reported: 1-3 days
Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Specimen should be obtained within 1-4 hours of ingestion and no longer than 6 hours.

Collect: Total volume of emesis/gastric aspirate. Also acceptable: Lavage.

Specimen Preparation: Transport Total volume of emesis/gastric aspirate. (Min: 6 mL)
If lavage is performed, only the first 30-50 mL of return is acceptable.


Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions: Specimens containing activated charcoal.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 12 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Interpretive Data: Results of this test suggest compounds that were ingested but do not suggest or support absorption of these compounds.

The following drugs or drug classes may be detected:

Acetaminophen, carisoprodol, chlorpromazine, cocaine, codeine, diphenhydramine, ibuprofen, lidocaine, meperidine, meprobamate, methadone, morphine, naproxen, norpropoxyphene, phencyclidine, phenobarbital, phenothiazine, phenytoin, primidone, propoxyphene, salicylate, sympathomimetic amines, theophylline, tricyclic and other antidepressants, trimethoprim.
