Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Draw 10 minutes before next infusion.

Collect: Plain red. Also acceptable: Green (sodium or lithium heparin).

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.2 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Frozen.

Unacceptable Conditions: Gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate), lavender (EDTA), lt. blue (sodium citrate), or separator tubes. Grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 2 weeks

Reference Interval:
Optimal: 10.0-20.0 µg /mL
Interpretive Data: Minimum serum concentration for infection control is 10 µg/mL; a target therapeutic range of 15-20 µg/mL is recommended for significant infections such as S. aureus.  Toxicity does not correlate well with serum concentrations.
