Amiodarone and Metabolite : 0090161

Mnemonic: AMIOD

Methodology: Quantitative Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 1-4 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Plain red. Also acceptable: Lavender (K2 or K3EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Amber Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions: Whole blood. Gel separator tubes, light blue (citrate), or yellow (SPS or ACD solution).

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 1 month; Refrigerated: 6 weeks; Frozen: 6 weeks

Reference Interval:
Therapeutic Range:
Amiodarone: 1.0-3.0 µg/mL
Desethylamiodarone: Not established
Potential toxic level: > 3.0 µg/mL
Interpretive Data: The therapeutic range of amiodarone is not presently well established. Toxic effects may begin above 3.0 µg/mL. The concentration of desethylamiodarone, a major metabolite, is also reported, but no therapeutic range is available.  At steady-state, the metabolite concentration is similar to the amiodarone concentration.  This metabolite may be pharmacologically active, but the extent of activity is not known with certainty.
CPT Code(s): 80299 x2
Cross References: Cordarone (Amiodarone and Metabolite), Nexterone (Amiodarone and Metabolite), Pacerone (Amiodarone and Metabolite)
