Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Collect during first 3 days of illness. If collecting urine, use first morning void.

Collect: CSF (in meningitis), nasopharyngeal swab, parotid gland duct swab, saliva, throat swab, or urine.

Specimen Preparation: Fluid: Transfer specimen to a sterile container. Transfer 2 mL fluid to a sterile container. (Min: 0.5 mL).Also acceptable: Transfer to viral transport media (ARUP supply #12884). Available online through eSupply using ARUP Connect™ or contact ARUP Client Services at (800) 522-2787.
Swab:
Place in viral transport media.


Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Remarks: Specimen source preferred.

Unacceptable Conditions: Calcium alginate, dry, or wood swabs.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 72 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Culture negative for mumps virus.
