Specimen Required: Patient Prep: CSF should be collected within first week of illness; urine after the first week of illness.

Collect: Testing performed for UUHC and local Utah clients only.
Blood in SPS Vacutainer tube for microbiology (ARUP supply #24964) Available online through eSupply using ARUP Connect™ or contact ARUP Client Services at (800) 522-2787. OR blood
in heparin, sodium oxalate, Bactec® Blood Culture bottles or other commercial blood culture bottles. (Min: 1 mL). OR CSF or urine.


Specimen Preparation: Blood: Transport whole blood in SPS, heparin or sodium oxalate tube, or blood culture bottles. (Min: 1 mL)
CSF:
Transfer 0.5 mL CSF in sterile container. (Min: 0.1 mL)
Urine:
Dilute 1 mL urine 1:10 in 1 percent bovine serum albumin within one hour of collection. (Min: 0.1 mL)


Storage/Transport Temperature: Room temperature.

Remarks: Specimen source required. Leptospiras may not survive in acidic urine.

Unacceptable Conditions: Clotted whole blood or whole blood submitted in anticoagulant other than those listed above. Urine not diluted with bovine serum albumin within 1 hour of collection or urine in preservative. Frozen or refrigerated specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Blood culture bottle: Ambient: 6 days; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
