Sulfonamides (Sulfas) : 0020044

Mnemonic: SULFA

Methodology: Quantitative Colorimetry
Performed: Tue, Fri
Reported: 1-5 days
Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Draw peak specimen 2 hours post dose.

Collect: Plain red. Also acceptable: Lavender (K2 or K3EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Remarks: Indicate which sulfa drug is being administered.

Unacceptable Conditions: Whole blood. Gel separator tubes, light blue (citrate), or yellow (SPS or ACD solution).

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 weeks; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 2 weeks

Reference Interval:
Therapeutic Range:
5.0-15.0 mg/dL
Toxic: > 20.0 mg/dL
Interpretive Data: This test is designed to measure sulfamethoxazole and sulfisoxazole. Peak sulfonamide (total) blood levels of 5-15 mg/dL may be effective for most infections, with concentrations of 12-15 mg/dL being optimal for serious infections. Sulfonamide levels should not exceed 20 mg/dL.
