Automated Core Laboratory:

ARUP began its Automated Core Laboratory in the fall of 1996 by centralizing higher volume testing on automated analyzers. This testing was previously performed in several other laboratory sections, such as Special Chemistry, Immunology, and RIA/Endocrinology. Other testing is continuously evaluated for transfer suitability to the Automated Core Laboratory, which is staffed seven days per week, 24 hours per day. The Automated Core Laboratory also relies on employees who are cross-trained on multiple analyzers and, with more than 130 different tests performed, is ARUP’s largest laboratory section. Tests performed include more than 40 endocrine, cancer antigen and other immunoassay tests; 50 serum chemistry tests; 18 urine chemistry tests; 5 fecal tests; and 25 specific proteins by nephelometry. All of the analyzers in the Automated Core Lab are random-access analyzers, allowing many tests to be performed on an around-the-clock basis as soon as they arrive at the laboratory. Accumulated data shows that 95% of all tests performed in the Automated Core Lab are reported within 24 hours or less. To ensure these turnaround times, the Automated Core Lab is physically positioned close to Specimen Processing. The Automated Track System delivers specimens to this location within two minutes of leaving Specimen Processing and these specimens are automatically sorted for the particular analyzers in the lab. For example, about half of the nephelometry tests are performed on one nephelometer and the other half on an identical instrument, enabling more rapid throughput and more efficient use of reagents and technologist time. However, in an emergency, either analyzer could be used to perform the tests normally performed on the other instrument. Nearly every analyzer in the Automated Core Lab has such a backup analyzer.
