Dr. jackson discusses the value of data mining

Dr. Brian Jackson, ARUP's medical director of informatics, discusses the importance of labs having a data-centric mindset in his article, “The Value of Data Mining,” published in Advance for Administrators of the Laboratory. Dr. Jackson illustrates how the use of analytics improved decision-making in baseball and how Amazon.com's information-rich customer experience has made it one of the most successful dot-com retail enterprises.

Likewise, clinical laboratories can benefits from aggregating and analyzing customer data. One example is ARUP's own ATOP® program, which identifies potential over-, under-, and misuse of individual laboratory tests and represents an opportunity for laboratories to steer physicians toward more appropriate ordering patterns.

  • The most successful laboratories of the future will be those that embrace data analytics to improve their internal processes and provide more value to their customers. The software tools are widely available; now we just need laboratory professionals with the vision to take advantage of them.
